When I was a child, my father turned me on to the classic 60s television show "The Prisoner." In the show's opening sequence, Patrick McGoohan's character drives this beautiful little racecar throughout London. Since then, I've wanted that car. That car was a Lotus Super 7.
In the 1990s, a guy named Ron Champion started a movement in which people built their own low cost replicas of the Super 7. These cars are called "locosts." I found out about them 2 or 3 years ago and have been an avid researcher since.
In October 2009 (or so), I found one on Craigslist for $3500. It was the deal of the century. It had nearly everything necessary to build a car and a substantial amount of work had already been done. And my beautiful, supportive wife knew how much it meant to me that she graciously encouraged me to get it!
This first set of images displays the pickup and delivery of the car to my friend's garage, some details of its assembly, some disassembly work on the front suspension, and pre-work on the rear suspension.
My co-worker's brother is a full-time ferrier (horse shoe maker) with a portable welding shop. He helped me weld some brackets onto a new rear axle and install the rear axle (with limited slip differential). Unfortunately, the shocks that came with the car aren't the right size, so we weren't able to put the whole thing together.
